7 Steps to brushing your teeth like a pro

The best way to keep your teeth clean and healthy is to brush them. We all know this. But how do we do this well so that we avoid gum and teeth problems? Follow the simple steps below to learn everything you need to know to brush your teeth properly.

 
The 7 Steps To Brushing Like A Pro
 

 

  1. To start with you want to grab your toothbrush. We recommend using a soft toothbrush - our favourite is the soft toothbrush by Sensodyne Pronamel. This toothbrush will not be too abrasive on your teeth, whilst still maintaining the ability to clean your teeth properly.

  2. Next you are going to need toothpaste. People often wonder which toothpaste is the best. As long as the toothpaste you have chosen contains fluoride (which most popular brands do), the toothpaste is suitable.

  3. Now that you have your toothbrush with toothpaste, your next step is to begin brushing. Place your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to your gum line. Move your toothbrush in small circular movements. Avoid moving your toothbrush back and forth over your teeth, this creates wear on your teeth. This is also referred to as the ‘modified bass technique’ of brushing teeth.

  4. Dividing your mouth into quadrants helps you to know how much time to spend in each area. Brushing your teeth properly and thoroughly normally takes a minimum of 2 minutes. Therefore, if you divide your mouth into upper left side, upper right side, lower left side and lower right side, you will know that you need to spend at least 30 seconds in each quadrant.

  5. Be careful not to miss any surfaces of your teeth. If it helps, create a routine. Start with the outer surfaces of your teeth, then the inner side facing your tongue and lastly brush the top surfaces of your teeth used for chewing.

  6. Avoid rinsing or gargling your mouth after brushing your teeth, even with mouthwash. This will remove the fluoride coating that you have brushed onto your teeth.

  7. And finally, remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day and no more than three times, as excessive brushing can cause wear on your teeth.
